Materials scientists are designing composite materials from the micron level, developing metamaterials engineered at much finer scales and rapidly prototyping nanoscale materials for myriad applications. In this special showcase feature, we take a look at the latest designs and innovations to come out of the Milan Design week that use composite materials. Successful application avoids errors, reduces the number of iteration loops needed to validate new designs, saves on prototyping costs, and shortens development times. Edgar Stach, professor of architecture, and assistant professors of architecture Kihong Ku and Daniel Chung will research how digitally-driven manufacturing of composite materials can assist architects in designing stable, complex-shaped buildings. The designers also used fabrics made of the sustainable wool yarn that will feature in the BMW i seat upholstery.
